Mosquito Dunks

The Fire Department still has some mosquito dunks available at the fire station.  As in the past, the first two are free to residents and any additional are $1.00 each.

What are mosquito dunks?  They are a small donut that when put in standing water will float and slowly release a long-term, biological mosquito larvicide at the water's surface.  This larvicide gradually settles in the water where it is eaten by mosquito larvae growing there.  This will help eliminate the threat of West Nile Virus in Liverpool Township.  One dunk will cover 100 square feet.

Fire and Rescue Protection

The Valley City-Liverpool Fire and Rescue Department is housed in a modern nine bay building at 6700 Center Road in  downtown Valley City. The original building was built in 1951 as a Fire Station and Community Hall.

The Present Fire Station

The Fire Station before the last addition and remodeling

The Valley City Fire Department is a combination department consisting of 45 members.  The station is staffed with 2 part-paid members during the day from 6AM until 6PM, every day except Sunday.  Evenings are staffed with paid on-call members who respond from their homes.  We have one full time person on the department.

The present department was organized in 1934, but it can be traced to 1909 where a group of about 25 were the firefighting force for the township.  The fire department was responsible for putting Valley City on the map by holding one of the first U.S. "Street Fairs", a tradition that continues today.  Each year in August,  State Route 303 is closed in the center of town for the weekend and the Valley City Street Fair is held.  This event is used  as a supplemental fund raiser for the fire department.  During World War II most of the profits were dispensed in the form of cash to area servicemen.
